about the girl
Pleased to meet you. I’m a freelance writier and somewhat of a free spirit. I have a definite obsession with screen doors, front porches, rain, free thinking, and guilt free living.
I don’t fit the mold of the American girl, although this is where I live.
I’m not poor, but I’ve never owned anything Prada, never carried a Coach purse, I like to shop at Goodwill and garage sales and I appreciate the simple things in life (like noticing how delicate, frosty looking sunbeams are playing through my window right now, and I can see all the little floating dust particles that just linger in midair). I like the sound of children laughing, the smell of freshly cut grass, the ocean, my son playing the guitar, my daughter’s singing, and all artwork and old architecture in general.
I don’t know what has happened to simple living, family life, or fairy tales…but I will never let myself get too far away from being a child. I’m 42 (as of 2009)… and I think I look pretty damn good, but I am not afraid of getting old and I’ll never consider plastic surgery. My secret plan is to be the very best grandma ever and I can’t wait to get there. (My children are 18,16, and 14 so I have a way to go).
I had a difficult childhood but met my real dad when I was 13. It was accidental. I adore him and miss him terribly. He was the best part of my life besides my children. I spent every moment of the last 13 days of his life with him in Hospice and was there when he took his last breath. His ashes are in my upstairs loft in an urn and I talk to him often.
I love foreign films, canoeing, dragonflies, sunset, standing in the rain, and hand made quilts. I still enjoy hand written letters, old photographs, long drives, and St. Augustine. I think everyone should slow down, hug their friends, strangers and their children often, and read at least one really good book every few months.
I’m an only child and am not generally lonely even if I’m alone. I could do without television just fine, but not music. I’m sometimes moody, often introverted, although one wouldn’t suspect so upon meeting me. I like teapots, handmade jewelry, farm markets, and learning new words.
Someday I’m going to have a front porch swing like Noah’s dad did in “The Notebook.”
