Why Twitter? It’s Like a Pocket Full of Sunshine
The wonderful thing about Twitter
Is Twitter’s a wonderful thing…
Oh was that Tigger? Well, Twitter is a wonderful thing as well. Why?
Just because it makes me happy. I know, I know…That’s not very business-like or profound, but it’s true. I’ve scanned through countless articles of the deep truths of Twitter, how it can improve your business, your life, your neighbor’s life, and your overall productiveness and success.
I say sure…erm…okay, but I’m a simple girl with a simple life, and simple little thoughts are running around in my head right now. I don’t really know if having 30,000 followers will improve my business, my customer base or my pocketbook (by the way, lots of unexpected people have a huge following….MC Hammer is one), but I do know that Twitter makes me smile.
Yes, at times it is a nuisance as well as a distraction, but so is a puppy….but they make us happy, right? Right. Twitter, to me is just almost as exciting as curling up with a good book. With Twitter I can do the following wonderful things:
- Create my own little world of individuals and listen to their random comments and rants. This is a far more beautiful thing than you may realize, because this means I am the king (or queen) of my own little world. I control the entire tone of my twitter experience. I am a writer…so I have filled my tweeting world with other writers, publishers, philosophers, Christians, and other thinking people. For diversity, I add a random and occasional rebel or screamo guitarist. There are only two people in my entire twitter kingdom that I knew before adding them. That’s right, I seek out random strangers who I find irrisistably interesting or enlightening, then I add them.
- Its like a personal pocket full of sunshine, a secret society. I’ve never had time for clubs, and my social circle leaves something to be desired. But I am a full time wife, mommy, freelance writer, and marketer living in a home that requires entirely too much upkeep (where does all this dust come from? Who makes the black, hairy substance that gets clogged in the front of your refrigerator vent? How do the inside of cabinet doors get food on them?) and two naughty dogs that cause constant chaos, as well as messes, so that may be part of the reason for my isolation. Twitter allows me to converse with intelligent and respectable individuals from the comfort of my pajamas. Just this morning I sent a private sarcastic comment to the CEO of EzineArticles, Chris Knight (and he messaged me back). Where else would that happen? Nowhere…That’s why Twitter is a wonderful thing. Oh, and make sure you add at least one person who likes to hand out random cheerful sayings throughout the day. Who needs to hire a life coach when I’ve got Ivan Campuzano, author of “How to Grow Your Shine On” with his perfectly timed inspirational comments!
- It’s a secret admirer’s dream come true! Twitter allows a person to take all their favorite blog and website authors and place them in their own little community so they will never get lost. It’s so much better than bookmarking a link. It’s like reading a book and then inviting the author over to watch tv with you. Oh, so you like this blog? Wonderful, wonderful…with one click you can follow the blog writer every day, glean their personal thoughts, insights, random musings…..it’s almost stalker quality. Wow, I’m scaring myself…I promise I’m not Kathy Bates (and James Caan is not locked in my spare bedroom).
- Your friends are my friends are our friends…This is just something that I personally do. I don’t know about other people or how they find friends on Twitter, but if I really find someone really interesting, I naturally assume that their friends must be equally cool. Twitter gives me the awesome ability to see their friends and make myself right at home, adding whoever I want to my own list. I feel like the characters on Seinfeld who would make themselves at home, raiding Jerry’s cupboards, eating all of his food, and using his phone. Twitter gives you friend “raid-ability.” Most recent raid? Yesterday, I added most of “writer dad’s” friends to my own stash. Personal favorite so far? CK_Lunchbox by far. A dad of five…lol, that’s just cool all by itself. Claims he “has issues, therefore he blogs.” Very funny stuff.
So that’s my own personal take on the wonders of Twitter. It’s the most crippling diversion and the funnest (that is not a word) distraction all rolled into one ball of friendship and personal entertainment. What will they think of next?

well you got me hooked! i dont know what im doing on there but im hooked!
Super article on Twitter! I remember when I first signed on for this service. Seemed a bit silly at first. Then, I started to get some feedback from folks who liked the links I sent out and found it to be a great way to stay connected without monopolizing anyone’s time.
I use Tweetdeck almost exclusively now, as it’s search feature alone is invaluable! Have a few posts on Twitter that I’d love your feedback on. You can find them here.
